Despite the hype surrounding the Harry Potter books, they are really rather good. Of course, some are better than others - I personally thought that book 5 was overlong as less neatly plotted than it could have been.
However, in book 6, Rowling is back on form.
Shorter (thankfully) than book 5, book 6 is particularly satisfying, with a tight-knit plot, building on hints from previous books and leaving plenty of unsatisfied questions for the final book to answer. For me, as a reader, it is nice to have my suspicions confirmed about some things - for example who Harry goes out with - and surprised by others. I was so pleased to guess the identity of the Half-blood Prince before the author revealed it! (No, I'm not telling. Read the book.)
There is greater emotional range than any of the earlier books and I actually shed a few tears at one point. Harry growing up is handled nicely, as are changes in the magical world. It would be tempting for the author to become so attached to her world and characters that she could not change - or indeed kill - them. But Rowling stays true to her story, even if it means sacrificing a well-loved character or two. (No, I'm not saying who).
At the end of the book, we are left with more mysteries than we started with. I can't wait for the next one to come out!

J K Rowling's increases the pace considerably in the Half-Blood Prince. Containing less background history than Order of the Phoenix, this story is action packed. It clearly maps out the terms for the final confrontation which will occur in the next book. The ending is more tantalising than ever, as we are left with a clear idea of what the final book will entail.
This book is the most adult yet, in terms of violence, the teenagers' love lives and the overarching themes. There is more consideration of the grey areas between good and evil, the world of politics and the fallability of human nature.
The mood is increasingly dark and resolute, though there are still some brilliant comedy moments that had me laughing out loud.
Finally, I found this book shocking. Many of the mysteries hinted at in the previous books are finally laid bare. I won't say what the revelations are, but they do include much more about the prophesy, whether Ron or Harry will end up with Hermione and of course the identity of the half blood prince.
Overall I thought this book was fantastic. Even though it may rule out some well argued theories about various characters and relationships, I cannot imagine that any fan will be disappointed.
Letrasett's Review
Yet another triumph from JKRowling! A truely magnificent continuation of the Harry Potter saga and probably the most moving and gripping to date! We enter the realm of magic once again with The Half-Blood Prince to see a very different world from the one we left...The war has well and truely begun and the results are even encroaching into the muggle world. Harry faces many new dangers and Dumbledore is also facing what seem to be insurmountable obstacles. I can't tell you much about the story itself in fear of giving the game away but I can confirm what you probably already know. Firstly, yes another key character dies in this book, secondly, yes there is a clear link to the Chamber of Secrets. The 'Half-Blood Prince' is someone rather unexpected and there is indeed a new Minister of Magic who is NOT Arthur Weasley. The new DADA professor is an important and complicated character and you can be sure that no matter how many theories you have developed concerning this book, almost every one of them will be proved widely off the mark! I consider myself one of those rabid, obssessive Harry Potter fans and I waited outside a WHSmith at 12:00 to get my copy, glaring fixedly at anyone who even looked to be considering jumping the queue. I then stayed awake until 7:00am, refusing point-blanc to put it down and finish in the morning. I may now be so hyped up on coffee that I could light up St. Pauls, but it was definitely worth it. Buy it, borrow it, steal it -I don't care how you do it but read this book! The only real problem that I am now faced with is the horrifying and painful fact that the very last and final book will not be released for at least 2 years! God how will I go on?!
Georgie's Review
I have just finished reading the latest Harry Potter book in the series, after buying it this morning and reading it in an 11 hour long stint.
As usual, J.K Rowling does not disappoint. I enjoyed it from the very beginning, having been particularly eager to find out what the first chapter was, since I had heard that it had been brewing in J.K Rowling's mind for some 13 years.
The sixth book brings many new characters, as usual, as well as all our old favourites. There's a shocking revelation about who the new DADA teacher is, and the identity of the Half-Blood Prince was a twist I never could have anticipated. Then there's the usual Invisibility Cloak snooping, a new (and slightly unexpected, for me at least) love interest for Harry, while Ron and Hermione continue their on-off love-hate friendship-relationship, and brand new relationships are formed.
Then, of course, there is the death of another major character. It is almost expected, but still comes as a chilling surprise as J.K. keeps us lingering for a few chapters, awaiting the outcome.
Put all this with amusing love potion situations, laugh-out-loud one liners, and a delicious hint of what is to come in the final book (sob!), and you've got yourself another highly enjoyable volume of this incredibly well written and original series.

This is kind of a late entry, since i finished it on 17th. SPOILER WARNING.Don't read below if you haven't read the book, or if you don't want the book to be spoiled for you, by my babling. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED <_< If you haven't read, go get it now!
Amazing book. Very different from the usual year at hogwarts, but it was still great. Most of the book focuses on the history of voldemort. We learn about the horcruxes. And how there's four left to be destroyed.
The penisieve visions were great. Alot was learnt from them, as mentioned above.
Harry being the quidditch captain...Um...I think there was more about Angelina's captency then Harry's in here. He wasn't nearly as stressed about quidditch as Angelina was.
Romances. Knew Harry and Ginny would get together. But overall i didn't really like the romance aspect to the book. It seemed a bit like fanfiction. But it was a good part of it on the side.
Draco Malfoy. Wow. He changed alot. It was amazing. (I mean crying!?! and in with moaning myrtle ..I wonder how moaning myrtle seems to come in all the books from COS.. :) come on! :D) At beginning, i thought 'the plan' was to kill Potter, not Dumbledore.
Snape. Holy macro! What a dramatic scene that was! THe look of hatred on his face. and suddenly blasting Dumbledore with the killing curse (i'm not saying i liked what happened, but i loved how J.K. Rowling put it in words. :)). BTW do you guys think snape's evil, or is he just playing it?
The title is very suiting IMO. As we learn the the HBP is Snape, and alot of the book was revolving around him.
R.A.B. Any ideas? I think its either Regulus Black or Amelia Bones. Maybe someone new
Any ideas on what the last Horcrux could be. I have my own theories, but i won\'t say until i've heard yours :) :P
Book 7 is gonna be extremely<< interesting with the fact that Harry wasn't going to return to Hogwarts, and J.K.Rowling confirming that the match with Luna's was the final match of them all.
Hope you liked it as much as I did.
